This typical Victorian terrace front garden was neat and tidy but uninspiring. With a path on one side and lawn on the other, the garden was two separate parts neither of which enhanced the house.

The solution was to realign the path so it enters the plot diagonally opposite the front door. The garden now appears to occupy the full width of the plot and the path moves through it past two good-sized borders. Porcelain paving in marbled grey compliments the greenery and will be easy to keep clean (even after an English winter).

The view in to the garden from the gate and back out from the front door is now of lush planting. Topiary lollipops and box hedging give structure, so the garden looks good all year. In summer the borders will overflow with lavender, alchemilla, allium and white roses.

The old wall at the front boundary (buried under the hedge and ivy) was rebuilt and new metal railings and gate were added to give a classic feel.
