A Suburban New Build Garden

- Long Stratton, NR15

This sunny garden is overlooked on all sides. The brief was to create a place to relax in, that the whole family could use all year.

The main requirements were:

  • Screening from surrounding houses,
  • An eating area for at least 5 people,
  • A decked area for sunbathing,
  • Low maintenance and mainly evergreen planting.

The design, which has not yet been built, incorporates a large deck with built-in seating and ample space for a table. A second deck against the house is a sun-trap for lounging. A gravel area outside the kitchen includes a spike for the rotary washing-line, and a built-in bench. A wide path of block paving connects the various areas.

Screening is provided by a pergola and two groups of three Betula albosinensis. Other planting is mainly evergreen, chosen for foliage and textural interest.

A utility area has been created, screened from the rest of the garden, with easy access from the house and the front garden.
