A Garden on a Slope
This hypothetical south-facing garden sloped down from the house. The main requirements of the brief were:
- a breakfast area for two people,
- a second seating area in shade,
- no lawn
The design terraces the garden to create usable space.
The sunny upper terrace against the house provides a breakfast area. The planters at each end contain scented plants and herbs for the kitchen. Steps from the upper terrace lead down to a stepping stone in a pond with a water wall of beaten copper. The retaining wall on the lower terrace doubles as seating. An arbour over the end section provides shade and a view of the water wall. The bank between the two terraces is planted with shrubs and herbaceous plants to give interest throughout the year.
