A Front Garden

- Beetley near Dereham, NR20

This front garden comprises a broken concrete drive and a sea of gravel. There is no path to the front door nor any physical or visual barrier preventing visitors from entering the garden at any point along the frontage. The area is quite stark and bare.

The main requirements of the brief were:

  • to structure the space to provide a clear route to the front door and vehicle access to the garage,
  • to make the garden look interesting all year,
  • to keep maintenance to a minimum.

The design, which has not yet been built, uses gravel and railway sleepers to unify the drive and garden. A path and raised bed of railway sleepers defines the access to the front door, while further planting under the window restricts the view in to the front bedroom. The planting uses drought tolerant plants and includes a large proportion of evergreens.
