This garden was almost a blank canvas. The owners wanted to create a lawn-free garden with a choice of seating areas and lots of cottage-style planting to attract birds in to the garden.

The design is based around a series of concentric circles centred on a bird bath. A curved arbour at the back provides a pleasant place to sit and partially screens the view of the property opposite. Three multi-stem Amelanchier lamarckii are added in the far corner of the garden to visually balance the arbour and to camouflage the irregular shape in that corner.

The hard landscaping is a mixture of setts, gravel, and random-laid paving. There is ample space for six chairs outside the living room, and several other areas in the garden large enough for two. Two bands of planting break up the hard landscaping and reinforce the circular theme. A mixed shrub and perennial planting is added around the boundaries to screen the fences and add some interest.

Garden area: 150m2
Location: Loddon, Norfolk, NR14
Construction & planting: IFC Landscapes Ltd.
