This property in Deopham is part of a group of converted barns. The kitchen wing is higher than the bedroom wing, creating a split-level garden. The owners wanted to create an entertaining space that could be used all year round.

The design reconfigures the deck and introduces generous steps leading directly from the kitchen down to the courtyard. The deck has ample space for a pair of sun loungers. The steps lead in to a cart-shed style gazebo, which sits in a space created by narrowing the deck at one end. The gazebo provides a covered space for sitting and dining; there is a built-in BBQ to one side.

A built-in bench in the far corner of the courtyard creates a separate seating area around a free-standing fire-pit table. The space under the bench can be used as a log store.

A water feature of a rendered wall with three spouts and flint detailing becomes the main focal point in the courtyard, visible from the kitchen, the bedrooms and the three outside seating areas.

Planting across the bedroom wing screens those rooms and provides a pleasant view. A small multi-stem tree, uplit at night, screens the view in to the bedrooms from the farmhouse. A second planting area in the middle of the courtyard creates a circular route around the garden making it feel much larger.
